tagg-ed

since life's kind of boring (and filled with the sickness lately), and i have nothing to blog about, i guess i should do the few tags i've been...tagged? 

whatever.

first, ruth's q&a about matt & i:

1. how long did you date before you got married? about 2 years. that's 8 times longer than the average provo couple. 

2. how long have you been married? almost 4 months now. my how time flies!

3. what does he do that surprises you? the compassion that he shows me at random times, like when i'm sick or just need a hug.

4. what is his best feature? his eyes and lips...and pretty much his whole face. he's a keeper!

5. what is his best quality? his honesty that he has with himself and others. and his deep and passionate artistic side.

6. does he have a nickname for you? he'll hold his hand up to his mouth and "talk" like it's me, and he calls his "wifey voice." i think that's the closest thing to a nickname he has for me. wifey. 

7. what is his favorite color? shoot...i really don't know...red? blue? green? something along those lines...

8. what is his favorite animal? uhhh...why do i feel like i'm on a newlywed game? i would say dogs. and labs to be more exact. 

9. what is his favorite food? matt will eat just about anything. but if i have to narrow it down, i'd say pizza, specifically of the papa john's variety.

10. what is his favorite sport? matt's not really a sports guy, but he does really like to watch world championship poker. 

11. when and where did you first kiss? sometime in june of 2006 in my apartment after matt came home from a school trip in maryland. 

12. favorite thing to do as a couple? we're pretty chill people, and we will often on a weekend night get a pizza from papa john's and watch a movie. lately, we've been watching discs of "the office," which we have a lot of fun with. 

13. do you have any children? come on, we've only been married for (not even) 4 months! and no, i'm not pregnant, either. 

14. does he have a hidden talent? matt has quite the artistic side to him that you may not think exists given his field. but he's a wonderful musician with an incredible ear. he plays his cello and bass a lot at home and shares his talent with the neighbors.  

15. how old is he? 26. 

16. who said 'i love you' first? i think i did? but he didn't say it back...and i don't think it was said again until he said it to me.

17. what is his favorite music? he loves classical music and blue grass. and a lot of stuff in between, but those two are high on his list.

18. what do you admire the most? i admire his passion, which he shows in nearly every aspect of his life. 

19. do you think he will read this? yes, he does read my blogs. maybe he should blog, too...

quirk #1
i have many ocd tenancies, including where things go (in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc) and where they go in the room they go into. my closet is colored coded, and i have the same exact morning and night routine that i've done...for just about ever. having to adjust to living with someone has been...interesting. but matt is oh so forgiving, and i've trying to let go of some of my ocd ways. 

quirk #2
i love, love, love looking at wedding photos. i could spend hours looking at people's wedding pictures on facebook; people i know, people i don't know, anybody, really. i also have several photography blogs i check for wedding pictures (and just wonderful photography, too). here are a few of my favorites: three winks studio, camilla photography (she did our wedding pictures), blue lily photography, and kelli nicole photography. i swear i'm not a stalker. i just like pretty photos. of people. who i don't know. getting married

quirk #3
i really love to cook! i know this quirk has been recently seen on my blog, but i really do! i think getting married and having another mouth to feed has really brought out that passion inside of me. and also, to give him credit, it really helps having a husband who enjoys cooking, too, and gets just as exciting as i do sometimes about making something new. perhaps this quirk explains why i've gained some weight since i've gotten married, too....

quirk #4
i love to organize and do fairly boring and mind numbing tasks. for example, when i worked at a book store, there was this large section of books in the children's book area that would commonly and fairly often get very disorganized. this section included the pop-up books, books made to look like cars, books with buttons on them that talk/sing, etc. and all of these books were different sizes, which made them hard to shelf and keep organized. and all of this pretty much meant that the entire section needed reorganizing every few months. here's where i come in...they would schedule me to come in a few hours before opening on a given day so that i could take EVERY book of the shelf, reorganize the books, and put EVERY book back on the shelf. some might find this task maddening (most did, in fact), but not me. i relished in this task. and pretty much any task or activity that is repetitive, tedious, and detailed, i'm the girl to get her done.

quirk #5
i hate leaving voicemails. i always feel so awkward and fake. and like i'm talking to myself. which i am. but i'm suppose to act like i'm talking to this person. who isn't there. and who can't talk back to me. so i'm talking to a machine instead so that it can record my one-sided conversation for the person i pretended to talk to. yeah, awkward. 

quirk #6
i have never been able to sleep in socks, even in the dead of a utah winter. my feet always get hot during the night, and usually when i wake up, they're hanging out from under the comforter. 

wow that was a boring last quirk. i apologize and blame the yoga i did at lunch this afternoon that has relaxed me to the point of sleepiness.

now, a post wouldn't be a post these days without a recipe, right? then let me introduce you to rosemary peasant bread from make and takes (see sidebar). matt and i fell in love with this bread, and it's super easy to make. it was just like the bread you overfeed on at macaroni grill, and with some olive oil & vinegar, it was perfect. and so delicious! try it. you won't be sorry.

leftovers

so...i've been meaning to blog for literally several days now. but i just can't decide what to blog about. since my life is so exciting these days (not really), and i have too many thoughts and things to choose from...

last week, i became so frustrated at the "flood of national doomsday prophecies," as matt put it. i witnessed so many extreme and negative reactions to obama's presidential win last week that it just made me crazy with sick. i understand how one can disagree with his proposed policies, but how does one get from disagreement to a this-country's-in-trouble-i'm-scared-and-buying-guns-because-obama-is-evil-and-will-ruin-this-country mindset? are you people actually listening to yourselves? it's ridiculous to think that a man 52% of the country voted for is somehow bad enough of a person and candidate to make his win send us all into a state of frightened panic, and that mccain was
obviously the right answer. notice i said right answer, like there was a wrong answer. do you people realize that we live in a democracy, where leaders are elected, and a beautiful system of checks and balances is set up for the sake of this country's continued freedom? do you really think that 52% of us were duped into believing that obama might actually make a fantastic president? that he might actually be a good change for this country? just because i voted for him does not mean that i thought mccain was the wrong answer or that he was going to ruin this government because of his vileness. i voted for who i thought was the better candidate, and either way, i knew that who won the election would have made a fine president and lead this country well. i just thought one man was a better fit for the job. that's a democracy people. so get out of your bomb shelters, return all of those guns you bought, and stop this pedantic, inane, and extreme wave of negativity towards the man who was chosen to become our next president. 

also last week, i thought about blogging about matt & i's journey to perfect a chicago deep-dish pizza. we've made a few recipes and are still using trial and error to perfect this wonderful pizza. one thing we've figured out is that, even though the recipe says it makes one pizza, there's definitely too much dough, and after it rises in the oven, it becomes super crusty. seriously. like there's a good few inches of horizontal crush on this pizza. but what we did like about this last try was the addition of parmesan and black pepper in the dough! it was zesty and delicious! if anyone out there has a great chicago deep-dish dough recipe/story, let me know. this is definitely a work in process.

this weekend, i though about blogging about my first family ward relief society super saturday experience. i felt so...uncrafty. and all did was sit at the magnetic-making table, and make christmas magnets, including one that said "it's a festivus miracle!" needless to say, matt was impressed.

i also tried a fabulous recipe i got from
real simple for sunday dinner and thought about sharing it. so...i'm sharing it.


not-so-sloppy joes

ingredients

1 to 2 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)
1 small yellow onion, finely diced (seriously,1 small onion...i only used half of a good medium sized one.)
1 clove garlic, minced (if you do not know the beauty of mincing garlic, go the nearest ikea now and buy their garlic mincer. it's beautiful. no substitute will do.)
1 red bell pepper, finely chopped

1 pound ground beef (we commonly use ground turkey in our home, because it's cheaper and healthier and tastes just like beef. who's the victim?)
1 6-ounce can tomato paste
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon (what? cinnamon in sloppy joes?! you heard me right, and you won't regret it.)
1 teaspoon salt
hamburger buns (depending on the size of your buns and how generous your servings are, anywhere from 4 to 6 buns.)
grated cheddar or mozzarella cheese (this will be a topping, so however much you want to load your delicious sandwich with cheese. i liked cheddar the best, and matt liked the mozz.)
sour cream (again, this will be a topping. i don't care for sour cream, but matt does. so, your choice and however much you want.)

directions
  1. heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. add the onion, garlic, and red pepper. saute until fragrant. if you're wondering what that means (i was), trust me, you'll know when your eyes are burning and tearing up from the strong aroma of these items cooking together. (about 3 minutes)
  2. brown the meat. now, you can either do this in the same pan with the vegetables OR you can brown it in a second frying pan so that it's easier to drain the fat. i personally wanted the fat drained out of my meat, because...that's just gross to think about the sauce thickening from...fat. ew! the trick is, though, that once the beef and vegetables are combined, you still want some of that olive oil kicking around. so, you're choice. just...make sure you brown the meat.
  3. once the meat is browned and it's all combined with the onions, garlic, and red pepper, add the tomato paste and all the spices. (don't make me list them all.) let's that simmer for about 10 minutes, and be sure to mix it well so that it thickens. i kept stirring it so that it wouldn't burn, either. 
  4. while the simmering is going on, toast your hamburger buns. then, spoon this lovely mixture onto your bun, sprinkle with the cheese and top with sour cream. (this dish is perfect with french fries, by the way.)
so...all the blogs in my head in one. oh, and one last note. while i'm happy it's fall here and not snowing like my old friend utah, i wish these trees would change colors already! everything looks the same as it did 3 months ago when we moved here! i want some fall colorage. now.
